Maailmantuskaa

On meidänkaltaisillemme länsimaalaisille aivan käsittämätöntä, millaista taistelua lukemattomat ihmiset joutuvat käymään päivästä toiseen.

We sat in a restaurant, stuffing ourselves up with food once again. A friend of mine said that she had found a Chinese web store and ordered lots of stuff; low-quality clothes and other junk. "Creating work for the Chinese children," she laughed. I would've laughed myself as well if I hadn't known it was most likely true. In one of those huge factories, there's someone sitting and sewing the same seam for 12 hours a day, every day making maybe the same amount of money in a month we pay for that shirt. And she might have to do that for her whole life, just to stay alive.

Usually I am very fond of a twisted sense of humor: the darker the better. Thus I definitely do not want to judge that friend for making that joke. I know laughter is a way of processing things. However, it can also be a way of ignoring, just like shrugging or turning your head away from something you don't want to face.

I spent last Friday in my bed because of a stomach flu and watched several episodes of a TV-documentary called Arman and the last crusade. In those episodes Arman Alizad travels around the world and spends time with various communities in very different and difficult living conditions. He visits a Nenets family on the Siberian tundras as well as the slums in Philippines. What he finds on his way is touching in so many ways and I think I shed some tears during each and every episode.

It is totally incomprehensible for westerners like us to understand what a struggle just staying alive is for so many people. There is nothing to be taken for granted. Nowhere is the situation insolvable and nowhere is it caused by the people living in the most misery. It is caused by the greed of human beings and the capability of that laughter, that shrug, that head turned away.

Yet, in those places where uncertainty is the only certainty and among those people who have to slave to stay alive, is a limitless amount of warmth, genuineness and love to be found. Or maybe that's why. When you don't have money, all you have is your family and your community. When there's no materia to surround yourself with, you have to find more genuine reasons for joy and happiness. When you know what it is to have nothing, you're always willing to share, even if you didn't really have anything to share from.

Why is this how things are? And what can I do? I don't know. Thinking about it makes me anxious. I know there's no use for me to wallow in all the misery on our planet. One should concentrate on things she's able to change. But what would that be, there's so much to do. Where to start? Both hope and faith run out. She just wants to hide away from the world, live a small and hardy life and when the time comes, leave this reality without nobody knowing, without leaving any trace. A small human being feels crushed beneath the weight of the world and sometimes gets so sad and angry, that she finds it hard to breath.

Every time all things wrong on planet Earth makes me anxious, I remind myself of them words of a hippie I met. "At least you can not be a part of the problem." I remember a friend of mine concluding that the meaning of life is to do well to others. So there is no room for moaning and complaining. One has to remember, that little drops of water make a mighty ocean and love only multiplies by sharing. One has to remember, that gratitude is a sign of a noble soul and that sometimes ideas seeming impossible do turn into a reality. One has to remember, that eye for an eye makes the whole world blind and that you don't lose anything by trying. The "weltschmerz" will go away - until soon enough it is thrown back at you again.
